HP opens first ever wind-cooled data center
12 Feb, 2010
Due to reporting errors, the story "HP opens first ever wind-cooled data center" posted Tuesday contained an incorrect explanation for Power Usage Effectiveness in the 11th paragraph, while the first sentence of the 14th paragraph ought to have referred to the price of electricity per kilowatt hour.
The story has been fixed on the wire and the corrected paragraphs follow:
Running at a full load, HP has calculated that the Wynyard facility has a 1.2 PUE, meaning that for every 1.2 watts of electricity used by the data center, 1 watt is used to power IT equipment, the rest being used for cooling and other facility needs.
Assuming HP pays between 10 and 11 pence per kilowatt hour, using outside air over chillers should save HP up to £2.6 million ($4.16 million) in power annually, Julian said.
