South Africa gets the iPhone 3G

Vodacom has launched the iPhone 3G in South Africa, initially available to prepaid and contract customers in all major cities.

"With iPhone 3G, Vodacom can further fulfill the strategy to deliver compelling and engaging Internet services via mobile to our customers," said Shameel Joosub, Vodacom SA managing director. "With special data tariffs to make browsing the Internet economical, Vodacom customers will have a great experience and excellent value tariff packages."

Contract customers can choose between Vodacom's 120s, 240 and 500s bundled minute plans, with the 8G-byte model available from 1,799 South African rand (US$221) and the 16G-byte model available from 2,899 rand. Prepaid customers will pay 6,389 rand for the 8G-byte iPhone and 7,569 rand for the 16G-byte iPhone.
